About Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar disorder, sometimes called manic depression, is an illness of severe mood
swings. If you have bipolar disorder, you may have periods of overly high moods
(manic episodes) or low moods (depressive episodes). These episodes may affect your
daily life, work, and relationships.
There are 2 types of bipolar disorder:
- Bipolar I disorder: episodes of extreme manic symptoms and sometimes extremely low
depression
- Bipolar II disorder: episodes of depression and milder episodes of manic symptoms
(milder mania is also known as hypomania)
There are 3 main types of bipolar episodes:
- Acute manic episodes: The high moods, which can make you feel overly
happy, irritable, or restless
- Mixed episodes: Having symptoms of acute manic episodes and depressive
episodes at the same time
- Depressive episodes: The low moods, which can make you feel very
sad, hopeless, or fatigued
GEODON is used to treat acute manic or mixed episodes associated with bipolar I
